2003 Wildlife Tourism Australia Inaugural Workshop

NOVEMBER 8-9, 2003

Inaugural Workshop hosted by Wildlife Tourism Australia

at Warrawong Earth Sanctuary and Cleland Wildlife Park

 Adelaide Hills, South Australia

Inaugural workshop, Adelaide - This event was a great success, in terms of the quality of the sessions, the energy and enthusiasm of the participants, and the really positive feeling of a common direction that was generated.

More than 50 people attended, including wildlife tourism operators of various types (e.g. tour operators, wildlife parks/zoos, sanctuaries, botanic gardens, national parks agencies), government tourism and conservation reps, academics, students, consultants. About half of the event consisted of small groups working on particular topics, and these generated lots of concrete ideas and plans for WTA to continue working on. There were also a variety of high quality presentations on aspects ranging from marketing to conservation. The group participated in an inspiring session on interpretation by internationally renowned Sam Ham and Betty Weiler.

All in all, I for one (and I know others echoed this feeling) felt that we definitely have the basis for a strong, cohesive association that can achieve some really important goals for wildlife tourism in Australia.
