Making compost saves you from buying commercial fertilisers and mulches and also reduces the amount of rubbish you send to landfill. About one-third (30%) of your household rubbish is made up of food scraps that will rot away naturally in the garden. This rubbish is called organic or biodegradable waste because it can break down or decompose naturally with time. To make a compost heap you can either buy a special composting container or bin, or you can set aside an area in the garden that is away from your house (compost tends to smell a little). Throw all your organic wastes onto the compost heap - fruit and vegetable matter, shredded newspaper, leaves, grass clippings and other garden scraps. It will need to be turned over every month or so and kept damp. When it has all rotted down, put it over your garden for the best treat your plants have ever had!
